Fall is just starting to turn the air chilly. The trees are beginning to change colors as the nights slowly grow colder and longer. As time marches towards winter, frost will begin to appear in the mornings and the lake will slowly start freezing over. Predictions say this will be a hard winter, which is a good thing, Thread will not ravage the surface this winter but instead fall as harmless black dust onto the ground.

It was not surprisingly cold, it was entirely expected, but that did not change the feeling in any way. The cold itself was bone aching. It seeped through leather and wool, any amount of layers, past skin and into the muscle. It would sit there within you and fester unpleasantly. It was dark, too. So dark that had there been a light anywhere there was no chance of seeing it. A dark the kind that had your hand been directly before your nose you still would not be able to see it. There could be no better partners than dark and cold, but that was typical of between.
It was in its own way a great relief and welcome that the moment lasted little longer than the blink of an eye and was quickly replaced by the warmth and bright light of the noon sun. The goggles kept the light from being blinding as amber gold wings spread wide flapped once before straightening out to send the dragon into a gentle glide.
This is it? This is the Weyr we were sent to? This is Telgar Weyr?
Yes, Verath, this is Telgar, or what will be Telgar Weyr.
There is hardly anyone here at all. The dragon snorted as they drifted closer and closer to the ground below them in the middle of the Weyr Bowl. Is this what Benden was like before?
Yes, Benden did not look very different from how Telgar looks now. Give it time, dear, Telgar will have glory.
It will now that we are here, Rosalinde. Verath was an exceptionally proud gold. There were many dragons who did not understand her, but those that did also knew that she was very kind and a good mother. She just liked to be respected a little more than other dragons.
This was not very different from the situation with her rider. Rosalinde was from a long standing family of proud medics who were very well respected and she was a black sheep only because she wanted to prevent illness and wounds as a dragonrider rather than mend and heal them. It was a very selfless thing to offer up one's life and she was proud of herself her family, and who she was already.
They landed gracefully, Verath creating a simple backdraft and used her long tail for balance. Her claws clung to the ground and she looked about at the Weyr Bowl, the rim, and the barely trodden pathways. She snorted again, having wanted some degree of attention for being a gold and for having arrived.
"Now, now, Verath, don't let your hide go to your head." Rosalinde said, sliding to the ground along the dragon's shoulder. She removed her helmet and let her pale blonde hair cascade to her shoulders. She shook her head to make herself feel more comfortable. With a flash of her icy blue eyes she looked back up at Verath, "We will not be the only gold, nor the Senior by any length, we shall have to prove ourselves worthy first." It was a challenge, but she was proud to accept it.landsofpern

Hearing a noise in the nearly empty Weyr Bowl, Orlaith stuck her head out of one of the Junior Queen Weyrs. Her hide sparkled as sunlight touched it. One of the other Queens has arrived.Which one, love? The one we haven’t met beforeAh, so Rosalinde and Verath from Benden then.
Eva stood up from where she had been sitting on the floor unpacking boxes and crates and dusted off her pants as Orlaith bugled a welcome to Verath. Eva and Orlaith had only just arrived themselves about an hour beforehand. They hadn’t done any exploring yet as Eva preferred to be get settled into her weyr before her duties as a goldrider of Telgar officially kicked off in a couple days.
Eva joined Orlaith, who was now seated regally on her ledge, and shaded her eyes against the sun to stare out into the Bowl. She also scanned the sky to see if any other dragons had appeared yet before returning her gaze to the newly arrived gold. She herself had had a few blues and greens help to carry luggage and furniture to the new Weyr. Orlaith had consented to carrying a few bags, put she could be a little stuck up at times and moving had been one of them. There was no way she would “demean myself by being turned into a pack horse” and Eva gave in since a grumpy dragon who had to fly straight to Telgar would be no fun for anyone.
Seeing that he was suddenly alone in the weyr, Tiny picked up the bone he had been chewing on and trotted out to join the two on the ledge. Not concerned with the goings on of the Weyr outside, he laid down a few feet from Eva and gave his tail a couple wags as he started back up with his ever-so-important gnawing. landsofpern

A bugle echoed through the skies and drew the immediate attention of Verath, because it was no ordinary bugle, it was a greeting and one from a fellow gold at that. She looked up the rocky wall of the weyr and among the many pocked holes that were entrances there was one golden figure. She stood out against the dull gray like a stone strung round the neck of a rather ugly obtuse woman. Verath looked up at her even as her dear rider's voice rang out to her.
Who is it Verath?
Verath didn't reply immediately. Instead she emitted a bugle in reply to Orlaith, almost mimicking her in greeting, but certainly not in pitch. Her bugle was a little higher, more feminine and youthful. After her bugle ceased repeating off the stone walls and the echoes halted she turned back to her rider.
She is Orlaith, her rider is Eva. She is from Fort Weyr.
Rosalinde raised a hand over her brow and brushed hair out of her eyes and looked in the same direction. Her eyesight was not as good as Verath's, but she could make out the woman who stood at the gold's shoulder. Yes, she could remember hearing of Eva from before having gone to Benden and now here they were together. Eva was more experienced having been a rider longer, but they were the same age. And Eva was different in one other aspect, Eva had a daughter.
We should meet with them, perhaps she knows more than we about the plans for Telgar Weyr that the other leaders have not told us. It would be good for us to work together. Rosalinde said to Verath.
The gold snorted, she didn't always like working with others, not until they were properly greeted. She was so very circumstantial and could argue over almost anything and usually get her way. Rosalinde knew it would take a lot of willpower to keep Verath from being insulting. In the end it made her appear so much colder. Not that it mattered much anyway, she was so very logical that often she came across cold to begin with. Maybe Eva would understand her better without her ever having to explain or apologize needlessly.landsofpern

Watching as the newly arrived golden pair settled onto the Weyr floor, Eva gave a wave before ducking back in her weyr really quick to put on a pair of boots. Re-emerging onto the weyr ledge, she motioned for Tiny to stay and began to walk down the narrow staircase that was carved into the Weyr wall. Every Queen’s weyr had a staircase leading up to it due to their dragons’ tendency to sneak away to have their clutches.
Where are you going?I’m taking a break from unpacking to go say hello and see what their plans are. I’d like to get to know Rosalinde since we are going to be working together. You should do the same with Verath. But she is so much younger than me.That doesn’t matter. She’s a fellow gold and you both have the same rank until one of you three golds decides it’s time to Fly. Orlaith heaved a bit of a sigh but gave in to her rider. The gold could concede when she knew Eva made a good point. We will get along. She would make a point to be nice to Verath and who knew, maybe they would become friends, or at least amiable co-workers.
By this point, Eva had finished walking down the stairs and was now starting across the Weyr Bowl. It looked like she would be the first to greet them. Most other riders wouldn’t be arriving until later in the day or within the week. She wasn’t even sure if any of the Wingleaders had arrived yet. Eva glanced around the Weyr as she walked, looking to see if any other riders had arrived since she’d started unpacking. There were a couple, but not many. She returned to idly watching the golden pair as she walked towards them and she was soon within ear shot. landsofpern

Rosalinde had a brief moment in which she was able to return the quick wave she had received from Eva. After that she had seemingly vanished from sight. She lowered her arm and returned to Verath and began a process of unloading some luggage. Not that Verath carried much and not that the pair of them had much to bring with them. She knew that being the youngest she was the most likely to be moved, transferred, and sent all over the place. Home would be subjective and if Telgar could be the more permanent of them all, all the more the better that she be determined to make it so. She didn't want to have to relocate too much, it woud be troublesome and though she could see the logic behind the method, she could also see the flaws.
I would not like having to move either. Verath remarked proudly.
Why? Because I make you carry luggage? Rosalinde smiled to herself.
Verath snorted, I am not so high that I cannot see the reason in my carrying 'luggage'. Besides, it makes me look stronger than the others when I do it. Of course with Verath it was all about appearances. She was the one who loved to be in the public's eye and she knew how to look the best of the best while being there. It was all part of her commanding presence that screamed she be looked at.
Rosalinde shook her head and her three great canvas bags sat like great lumps on the ground. It was all she had brought with her from Fort when she moved to Benden and then what little she acquired from Benden that she knew she should bring with her. Furniture she could get here if she wanted it so terribly badly. Not that she could not live without a chair when she had a bed. She looked at them and sighed to herself, what would Eva think of her? Had she heard much about her?
We have company Rosalinde mine, is that the Eva from above? Verath spoke idly, as if bored and was merely remarking about the color of the trees.
Rosalinde looked up, blonde hair falling into her face and covering her eyes. She stood upright, shoulders back as proper and pushed her hair away, tucking it behind her ears. Since leaving she was considering how to greet Eva, she decided she would go about it in the same way she had gone about greeting the Weyrwoman of Benden when she impressed.
"Eva, rider of gold Orlaith, it is an honor to make your acquaintance." Rosalinde bowed her head and spoke in a very professional manner, the way she had been taught to by her father.landsofpern

Not normally one for formality, unless it was a Weyr function or meeting, Eva was a little thrown off by Rosalinde’s formal greeting of a fellow Goldrider. Nevertheless, Eva responded in kind, not letting the surprise she felt show on her face. “As it is mine to make yours, Rosalinde of Gold Verath.” She bowed her head as well. Bringing it back up, she smiled at Roslinde and continued a little less formally. “I’m so glad to finally meet one of the other Goldriders assigned here. There’s not really anyone else here yet from what I can tell so I thought I’d come over and see if you needed help carrying anything. I took the weyr there as you can see,” Eva pointed to where Orlaith was sunning on her ledge in the autumn sun, “but the two on either side of it are still unclaimed. They’re nothing fancy but they’re at least roomy and have private baths.” Maybe it all came out in a rush, but Eva was excited to be starting a new venture in life and meeting new people. She was full of energy at the thought of building up the Weyr and getting to know everyone.
Orlaith had been keeping an ear on the conversation and threw in a personal aside to Verath, finally saying hello to the younger gold. Greetings Verath. My ledge and the one to my right seem to be in the position to receive the best sunlight if that’s important to you. See, she could be friendly. It wasn’t that Orlaith was a stuck up gold, it was that Verath was much younger than her and Orlaith didn’t know how she worked and operated. She would be friendly but it would take the two working together for awhile for the older gold to respect her as an equal. The gold was like her rider; she had a strong work ethic and disliked slackers.
In contrast to Orlaith’s behavior, Eva was very much hoping that her and Rosalinde and the third Junior could be friends as well as co-workers. Eva liked to be social and she would love to have some friends to hang out with at the Weyr. It had been a few years since she’d been to Fort and none of her close Istan friends were transferring. landsofpern

Rosalinde listened quietly and respectively. She was a little surprised by how friendly Eva was, how easily she spoke and shared information. She was open, obviously easy going, and clearly not afraid to speak her mind. It made her smile a little bit and though she did not reply immediately, she was not ignoring Eva's welcoming words. It was not at all how she had been welcomed when she had arrived in Benden Weyr.
"Well, I think I will let Verath choose where we stay, she would be the one most affected by the decision I think." She looked over her shoulder at Verath. Clearly the gold was looking at the ledges already trying to formulate which ledge she might like the most. Which one was the sunniest, the warmest, the most viewable. "It will not take her long to make up her mind, Verath is very decisive."
Verath did indeed hear Orlaith. She considered the other gold's words with some speculation, but in the end found her to be correct. They were indeed the best for sun and that was very important to her. The sun would feel good against her golden hide and it would glisten all the more brightly there. A good place to be seen by others. It is, I want that one then. She then directed her voice from Orlaith to Rosalinde. The one to the right of Orlaith's, that is the one we will live in. And that was that.
"It seems that we will be neighbors." Rosalinde said to Eva, "If it would be no trouble to you, this is all I have, we can make two trips and show me the way to the weyr next to yours. Particularly the one on the right, Verath likes that one." She did speak formally in some degree, but at least she was speaking. There were times when she did not say anything at all.landsofpern

Eva heard the still formal tone in Rosalinde’s voice, but she also saw the smile on the goldrider’s face. Not knowing anything of Rosalinde, Eva assumed that she was simply a reserved person and slightly shy around new people. Whether that was true or not would have to be seen. Eva looked at Verath and watched as the gold dragon studied the two remaining available Junior Gold weyrs. Orlaith had commandeered one of the two with the best sunlight as soon as she had seen them.
Orlaith acknowledged the gold’s choice and then spread herself out on her ledge to bask in the sun and watch the proceedings. Eva saw which one Rosalinde indicated Verath had chosen. “Orlaith was flip-flopping between that one and the one we moved into.”
“It would be no trouble at all.” Eva turned towards Rosalinde’s bags. “Which one would you like me to grab?” landsofpern

Rosalinde merely nodded in reply to Eva's remark. It was not much of a surprise to her. Most dragons liked to sun themselves and it seemed to be especially important to golds. In part, though it was only her speculation, it was because the sunlight glinted off of the metallic hides and drew attention. The other possibility was because it felt very good, almost like a good bath followed by oiling. Though that too was usually done in the sun and followed by a thorough sun bathing session.
"This one has my gear and this one has my healing and personal items. The other two are all clothing sets." Rosalinde said thoughtfully and she reached for her healing and personal bag. "If you bring my gear, I would not worry about my clothes, that would be helpful." She looked back at Eva and waited for her response. She could do it herself, but she had a feeling that perhaps Eva wanted to talk with her. "I take it you have not been here too long?"
Prying? Verath asked.
Not at all. She was unpacking when we arrived she had said, I am merely reaffirming what she had said. Rosalinde replied without any emotion.
Verath set herself down for a bit, I will watch your clothes. It simply would not do if my rider went about without clothes.
Rosalinde smiled to herself as she waited for Eva to lead the way. Surely she had explored a little since she had arrived. As such she had no difficulty in waiting. Patience was a virtue and all things came to one in time. She could wait. Thank you Verath.landsofpern
